The poor little guy has been freaking me out and making me look stuff up all day.
Today while chowing down on his usual millet feast, it looked like he had started choking on it. His mouth was opened, he stopped moving and he was making a sort of wheezing sound. After a few minutes it stopped and he went right back to the millet. I didn’t like that.
I did some searching and found that one person actually lost their ‘tiel from choking on millet! I also couldn’t find any information on what you should do if your bird is choking. I would really like to know the answer to that before I ever have to actually deal with such a thing. I think I’m going to have to start cutting down on it, but I’m still having a hard time getting him to eat the pellets.
Later on we brought him to Anthony’s parents’ for dinner. He was nervous but didn’t really do much. Then as we were leaving he started thrashing around in his cage. Luckily he stopped almost as quickly as he started and didn’t appear to hurt anything.
So finally we were back home and he was relaxing on his basket, and I noticed he had a string of down/feathery stuff stuck in his nose. I kept trying to get at it so I could remove it but of course he’d turn his head as soon as I started making progress. Anthony eventually got it out.
Speaking of his basket, he loves it so much that I caught him actually eating the straw/wood/whatever it’s made of. From what I read, if it was small enough for him to swallow it should be small enough to come out the other end. So I guess I have that to look forward to!
